Don't get confused by technical jargon. This step-by-step guide will teach you exactly how to evaluate a solar system, compare quotations, and ask the right questions before making a 25-year investment.
Step 1: Generation
Evaluating Panel Types
Solar panels are not all created equal. The technology you choose dictates how much power you generate, especially on cloudy days or in high heat.
Polycrystalline: Older technology. Cheaper, but requires more roof space and drops efficiency rapidly in hot weather.
Monocrystalline Half-Cut (PERC/TOPCon): Modern standard. Highly efficient, performs better in high temperatures, and the half-cut design reduces generation loss from partial shading.
Buyer's Checklist
- • Are the panels Tier-1 certified?
- • Is the efficiency rating above 21%?
- • Do they offer a 12-year product and 25-year linear performance warranty?
Inverter Must-Haves
- • Built-in Dual MPPT tracking for better yield.
- • THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) less than 3% to protect appliances.
- • Integrated Wi-Fi/GPRS data logger for mobile monitoring.
- • 10-Year minimum warranty support in India.
Step 2: Conversion
Choosing Inverter Types
The inverter is the "brain" of your system. If panels are the engine, the inverter is the transmission. It works the hardest and is the most common point of failure if you choose a low-quality brand.
String Inverters: The standard for residential and commercial. One central unit converts power from all panels. Reliable and cost-effective.
Micro-Inverters: Placed under each panel. Excellent for roofs with heavy, complex shading, but significantly more expensive.
Step 3: Longevity
Structure Quality & Safety
A solar plant must withstand heavy rains, cyclonic winds, and intense UV exposure for 25 years. The "Balance of System" (BOS) is where many installers cut corners to offer a lower price.
Mounting Structure
Never accept painted MS (Mild Steel). Insist on Hot-Dip Galvanized Iron (HDGI) with at least 80 microns thickness or structural Anodized Aluminum.
Cabling
DC cables must be TUV-certified, UV-protected, double-insulated copper (4sqmm or 6sqmm). Incorrect cables can cause DC arc fires.
Electrical Protection
Ensure the quote includes dedicated DC and AC Distribution Boxes (DCDB/ACDB) with branded SPD (Surge Protection Devices) and MCBs.
Earthing
A standard system requires 3 separate earthing pits (Inverter, Structure, Lightning Arrester) using maintenance-free chemical gel electrodes.
